Marbled Clay Heart Earring Valentine’s DIY

It’s January and Christmas crafting is behind us for another year but wait, it’s the perfect time for some Valentine’s day crafting, hooray! Crafters love to create for the seasons and once one event has gone, they move straight on to the next occasion, coming up with new ideas each year.

I have been thinking about this Valentine’s day earring make for a while and have been looking forward to making them and showing you how easy and fun they are to create. If you don’t plan on wearing them for Valentine’s day, then why not make a matching set for your girlfriends’ for Galentine’s Day on the 13th of February.

What you will Need

  • Polymer Clay
  • Jump rings
  • Rolling pin
  • Heart cutter or knife
  • Resin or strong glue
  • Pointy tool or cocktail stick

How to Make

Get your polymer clay and cut the amount you need, mine came in small 5 cm squares and I used half a square of white, pink and red clay. The clay works best if you warm it up so use the heat of your hands or best still sit on it for a while (while still wrapped in the plastic of course)

Roll your polymer clay onto long sausage shapes and them twist your three colours together, try and keep it warm in your hands, twist the colours together again and then roll the clay until smooth.

Protect your surface, try and use a non-stick mat, I used my Dovecraft Messy Mat, using a plastic rolling pin to roll the clay till roughly 2-3mm thick.

Take a heart cutter, I used a set of royal icing cutters from Amazon, I used the largest one, roughly xxcms wide for the bottom heart and a smaller one roughly xxcm wide for the top part of the earring. Cut as many hearts out as you can, you can keep re-rolling the clay until you have used it up.

Create a hole in the top of the large heart and the bottom of the small heart, using a pokey tool. and lay the hearts on a sheet of baking paper. Pre-heat the oven to 110°C then place the hearts in the oven for 30 minutes. Check on them after 15 minutes to ensure they aren’t going too dark. Once baked take them out the oven and leave them to cool and harden.

You will know when the clay is baked by pressing a nail into the back, if it leaves a mark, pop it back in the oven for 10 minutes. Once ready, add a jump ring to your earrings, to join them together.

I find resin to be the strongest glue for adding earring posts to earrings, if you don’t use resin then find another glue like E400 or Dovecraft Ultimate Glue. Add the glue and leave to set for 24 hours.

These cute Valentine’s Day earrings are perfect for every day of the year, you can mixed up the colours and create new designs. If you create your own polymer earrings then tag me on @i_heart_maggie on Instagram or @IHeart_Maggie on Twitter so I can see your makes.
