Neon Slogan Sweatshirt DIY

Happy New Year everyone, I hope you had a lovely festive period. I have had a few months off crafting but I am back in 2022 with some new ideas and makes to inspire you.

My first make of 2022 is this neon slogan sweatshirt. I had seen lots of really cool neon slogan prints on pastel fabrics recently and I fancied making my own. I had my eye on a slogan sweatshirt that said Non but it was a little pricey, well not if you make it yourself! I ordered some neon pink iron-on vinyl and picked up an oversized lilac sweatshirt in the sale, then got to making.

What you will need

  • Sweatshirt
  • Iron-on neon vinyl
  • Cricut Maker
  • Heat Press or Iron

How to Make

This is a really simple make and if you are a dab hand at using iron-on vinyl you can no doubt make this with your eyes closed, but if you’re new to iron-on vinyl and electronic cutting then read on.

I started in Cricut Design Space where I typed out my slogan ‘Non’ several times, I then changed the font to see which one I liked best. My favourite 4 from top to bottom are Annlie Extra Bold, Candice Regular, Plantin Schoolbook and Trade Gothic Display. I went with Annlie Extra Bold as this was the closest to the sweatshirt I saw online.

I measured the chest space on my sweatshirt and worked out the best size for my slogan then sized my design to fit, you can do up to 12 inches on my Cricut mat but you can buy longer mats if you need a bigger design size.

The key with iron-on is to remember to mirror your design before cutting, this reverses the cut so it is read the right way once applied to your design. My vinyl was from Ebay and I will link it here, it cut and applied really well plus the colour was perfect.

I cut my design on the everyday vinyl setting then weeded the design to leave my slogan design. I trimmed the backing sheet so I could place it on my sweatshirt and centre it better. I placed my logo 4 finger widths down from the neckline as I had heard this was the ideal location, but it’s personal preference where you place yours. I would advise trying it on before heat setting so you can check you are happy with the placement.

I used the Cricut heat guide to work out the heat setting needed, this was 30s at 315F. If you don’t have a heat press then pop your iron onto the hottest setting. Leave to cool before peeling the backing sheet off (read your vinyl instructions to see if you hot or cold peel)

I am really happy with how this neon slogan sweatshirt turned out and I am planning a few more colour combinations with some more slogans soon, it would also work well on t-shirts.
