During a significant portion of last year’s maternity leave, I embarked on a delightful journey exploring the café scene across Ilkeston, Derby, and Nottingham. As promised, here’s a curated list of my favourite spots (in my humble opinion), perfect for those seeking a cozy coffee nook, a leisurely brunch, or a scrumptious lunch. I often find myself recommending these cafes to friends, and I hope they’ll be just as enjoyable for you.
The Cowshed – DE7 4PH
Nestled amidst picturesque countryside, The Cowshed offers an idyllic setting for an all-day breakfast, savoury paninis, or hearty baked potatoes. Don’t miss the opportunity to stroll along the nearby trails to visit the charming alpacas at Hopewell Hall Farm or explore the mystical caves in Hermits Woods, especially during wild garlic season in May. While the car park may be modest in size, ample roadside parking along the country lanes ensures convenience.
Bottle Kiln – DE7 6HP
With its charming gift shop and tranquil garden, the Bottle Kiln exudes an irresistible charm. While the menu may lean towards the pricier side, the fresh offerings and delectable cakes make it worth every penny. If the parking lot is full, fear not; parking at the church car park next door provides a convenient alternative.
Platta – DE7 6FY
A newcomer to the scene, Platta entices with its delightful breakfast and lunch options, often complemented by themed evenings. Despite its compact car park, additional parking across the road at the Top Club ensures accessibility. From quality breakfast fare to delightful lunches, Platta promises a satisfying food experience.

The Nutbrook Coffee Shop – DE7 6BQ
Situated along the scenic Nutbrook Trail within Shipley Country Park, The Nutbrook Coffee Shop offers a serene retreat for walkers and cyclists alike. Despite its remote location, this bustling café boasts a simple yet enticing menu featuring breakfast options, hot & cold lunches, and irresistible cakes, including my favourite the avocado and elderflower cake.
Millie’s Café @ Armstrongs Mill – DE7 5TT
A personal favourite, Millie’s Café at Armstrongs Mill delights visitors with its wide selection of cakes and delicious lunches. Be sure to explore the antiques centre on the top floor and indulge in some retail therapy at the M&S outlet in the basement. The old mill only has one lift or lots of stairs so if you are less mobile, you may have to wait for lift access during busy periods.

Trowell Garden Centre – NG9 3TG
A visit to Trowell Garden Centre is a treat for the senses, with its Digg Café offering a delightful array of breakfast and lunch options. Indulge in the irresistible fudge fixation cake paired with a comforting latte amidst ample seating and parking.
New – Fig & Fearn @ Trowell Garden Centre – NG9 3TG
Trowell Garden Centre has opened a stylish new cafe, right next to its existing one. What sets it apart? Table service, air conditioning, new menu, and lovely décor. While prices are slightly higher (thanks to the table service), the space offers a more relaxed and comfortable experience. Unlike the original cafe, it doesn’t serve larger meals, but it more than makes up for it with quality and ambiance. The real standout? The ploughman’s lunch. Generous enough to share (especially if you add a slice of cake on the side), it’s easily one of the best I’ve ever had.
Bardills Garden Centre – NG9 7JB
Another gem nestled within a garden center, Bardills Garden Centre boasts a cozy café housed in a charming wooden building. From hearty breakfasts to tempting lunches, accompanied by a well-stocked cake selection, it’s a haven for food enthusiasts and plant lovers alike. You have to try the warm cheese scones, they are worth a visit alone.
Oakfield Farm – DE7 6FP
For a memorable breakfast or lunch experience, look no further than Oakfield Farm, where you can savour delicious food while observing horse riding activities. Booking ahead is advisable to secure a table at this popular spot. The farm shop attached os also worth a visit, the giant scotch eggs aways come home with me!

The Windmill Café – DE7 6HD
Offering stunning views of Ilkeston and its surroundings, The Windmill Café is a must-visit destination. Whether you’re enjoying a simple yet flavourful menu or basking in the fantastic views from the patio area, it’s an ideal spot to unwind and indulge in culinary delights.
The Mulberry Café – NG8 6PE
Nestled within Strelley Hall’s historic stables, The Mulberry Café beckons with its quaint charm and delectable offerings. Embark on a scenic walk from Ilkeston or Trowell, accompanied by your furry friends, before treating yourself to local delights.
The Oat Shed – NG16 2NG
Situated in Kimberley, The Oat Shed captivates with its stunning decor and equally impressive brunch creations. Don’t miss the opportunity to sample their tasty bakes and delectable Beeston Brownies.

The Apple Tree Gift Shop and Teahouse – DE72 3RF
Showcasing charm in every aspect, The Apple Tree Gift Shop and Teahouse offers a delightful experience for the senses. Indulge in exquisite cakes (check out their drool worthy instagram) and peruse the charming gift shop for treasures to take home.

The Doughmother – NG9 2QS
Tucked away in Beeston, The Doughmother is a hidden gem known for its quaint ambiance and daily baked treats, this place had been on my list to visit for a while and I am glad I made the visit. I had a spinach and feta pastry but took home some tiramisu and baked cheesecake.
Cartwheel Café – NG9 2LA
Experience the vibrant atmosphere of Beeston at Cartwheel Café, where you can enjoy the most yummy brunch offerings and delightful cardamom knots are a must try. Don’t let the compact space deter you; it’s well worth a visit, with heated outdoor seating its the perfect spot to people watch.
Pip Tree Café @ Colliers Garden Centre – DE72 3FR
Although a short drive from Ilkeston, Pip Tree Café at Colliers Garden Centre is a hidden gem worth discovering. Indulge in delicious food and sample their tempting array of cakes amidst a charming plants.
Stable View – DE7 4PQ
Stable View has transformed into a top brunch destination renowned for its quality food and rustic ambiance. Whether you’re craving a hearty meal or a delectable slice of cake, this café promises a memorable experience. Voted the best cafe in Derbyshire in 2023, visit once and you will see why.
Aroma – DE21 7JQ
This place drew me in with their incredible cake pictures on instagram but it is more than just the sweet treats, Aroma captivates visitors with its enticing fresh menu and friendly ambiance. Given its popularity, reservations are recommended to secure a table at this charming café.
New – Beeston Heritage Cafe – NG9 1LZ
The outdoor space is the real highlight for me. With its beautiful gardens, you can relax under the shade of a tree, enjoying coffee and cake while surrounded by flowers. On my last visit, I had a delicious jalapeño cheese rösti, not something I expected to find in a tearoom! The café is also perfectly situated for scenic walks around Beeston Marina and the Attenborough Nature Reserve.
New – SUDA – NG8 2QJ
SUDA is tucked away in the Bramcote Lane shops, an area I love for its bakeries, butchers, and (in my opinion) the best charity shops around. By day, SUDA serves up delicious breakfasts and brunches; by night, it transforms, offering a varied menu of tapas, pizza, and burgers. The coffee is excellent, and you can even buy the beans to take home. Don’t forget to check out their sister restaurant, Zhug, one of my go-to spots for tasty Mediterranean dishes.
New – Castlefield Cafe – DE7 6HZ
Tucked away on High Lane East, Castlefield cafe (part of the kennels) is a dog‑friendly gem close to Swan Lake and easy walking distance of the Nutbrook Trail, ideal for a post-walk stop with your dog in tow. The cakes and savoury dishes are always delicious and there is always something new on the menu to try.
New – Trinity Farm Shop – NG16 2RZ
I drove past this place for years before finally stopping by and what a treat it is! There’s an organic farm shop, a cosy cafe, fresh local produce, and even plants for sale. It’s the only place I know that regularly stocks Padron peppers! It’s also a great outing for kids, with plenty of outdoor space to roam. For just £1 a pot, little ones (and grown-ups) can feed the resident chickens and sheep, a lovely hands-on touch.
New – AM Coffee – NG9 2LH
The new kid on the block in Beeston, this cafe boasts a stunning interior to match its stylish menu. With filled croissants and elevated toast options, it’s a beautiful space to enjoy a coffee and a catch-up.That said, it’s not the most kid-friendly spot. At £6 for a small cake that disappeared in minutes, it felt like an expensive treat and I didn’t spot many affordable options for children’s drinks either (though there is water on tap). Perhaps it’s simply not geared toward families. Still, if you’re looking for a sleek, grown-up place to relax with good coffee and beautifully presented food, it’s well worth a visit.
New – Bistro 66 – NG9 2LF
I visited this cafe a few months ago, and I’m still thinking about the avocado eggs, they were simply perfect, with every bite bursting with flavour! On the flip side, I was a little disappointed by the pistachio croissant. Having tried quite a few elsewhere, this one didn’t quite measure up due to the lack of filling. The staff were really friendly, and the place always seems busy, a good sign. I’ll definitely be back to explore more of the menu.
New – Cleaver Coffee – NG10 1EF
This place is a hidden gem in Long Eaton, with a stylish industrial vibe that still manages to feel cosy and welcoming. It was tough to choose from the menu, but my salmon and cream cheese bagel was an absolute hit and the Outpost coffee was seriously good. They also offer a “French Toast of the Week” which I’ll definitely be trying on my next visit. Another standout is their Wednesday pizza night, from the photos alone, it looks delicious and you can feed four people (including drinks) for just £49. Such a great deal, I’ll be booking soon!
I hope this guide helps you discover some delightful cafes for your next breakfast, brunch, lunch, or coffee outing. As I continue to explore new places, I’ll be sure to update this list. Feel free to share your favourite cafes in Nottingham or Derbyshire—I’m always eager to discover new culinary treasures!
